Potting Soil & Recommendations
You will need 10 quarts of soil for each 12" length of Windsor Planter. Choose a medium weight potting soil which promotes water retention. This type of soil has been formulated for outdoor container gardening.
Tip: Remember to drill drainage holes for outdoor use, before filling the planter with soil.
Drainage
The planter has a built-in water-minder feature to prevent root rot and provide a water reservoir. The small holes on the inside floor of the planter allow the water to collect in a reservoir in the bottom of the planter and return as needed. These holes are not for external drainage.
Planters exposed to rainfall or sprinklers need drainage. Turn the planter over and drill 3/8" holes through the center rib on the bottom of the planter at 6" intervals. It is important that you drill holes on the center rib and not into the water minder.
Easy to paint
Your Windsor planter is made of durable PVC plastic and comes in white. It is easy to paint to match your house or trim color for faux finishes, such as granite or marble.
- Clean planter with household cleaner and rinse completely. Light sanding will enhance adhesion.
- Apply primer to planter as recommended by your paint supplier.
- Apply exterior latex or oil paint as recommended by your paint supplier.
More Tips
- Choose a medium weight potting soil that won’t pack down in a driving rain or bake like clay in the sun.
- Routine use of plant food, according to manufacturers’ directions, will dramatically increase the health, beauty and fullness of the plants in your Windsor planter.
INSTALLATION
Mounting Instructions
Mount the rust-free aluminum brackets with screws supplied (or other fasteners as required for the type of mounting surface). Make sure that wall, window sill or railing to which you are attaching the brackets is sufficiently strong to hold the weight of the fully loaded planter. Brackets should be level, and the top of the brackets should be at least 2-3/4" below any overhang (like a window sill).
To place the Windsor planter on the brackets, find the back of the planter with the bracket slot running down the length of the planter about 2" from the top, and make sure this side is facing the mounting surface. Hold the planter level and against the mounting surface (wall or railing) with the top of the planter at least 2-3/4"above the top of the brackets. Lower the planter straight down onto the brackets making sure that the top of each of the brackets engages the slot on the back of the Windsor planter and that the upturned ends of the brackets that are projecting toward you find their home in the center rib of the bottom of the planter. Checking the bracket engagement in the center rib is an easy, visual check. To check the engagement of the top of the brackets into the slot on the back of the planter, gently pull the planter toward you as it sits on the brackets. If the top of the planter easily pulls away from the mounting surface, you will be able to look behind the planter and see the top of one or more brackets. If you can see the tops of the brackets, you have missed the slot. Lift the planter and try again. When properly engaged, the planter will be difficult to pull toward you from the mounting surface, and you will not be able to see the tops of any of the brackets.
Safety Note: The screws included with the bracket are only for application on wood walls and railings. Hollow core wall (siding) or masonry surfaces require other fasteners. Consult your hardware store if you do not know what to use.
