Plant Helper: Herbs to Show & Cook

Herbs to Show
Herbs are plants, too. Think color, height and form when selecting herbs for a showy outdoor container:

Deep green parsley
Cool gray-green sage
Tall, graceful dill
Glossy, purple basil

Recipe:
Plant gray-green sage with purple basil
Plant dill as the backdrop or center plant, flanked with purple basil
Border rosemary or thyme with parsley

Herbs to Cook
Most herbs are easy to grow. Use a commercial soil mix. Many herbs prefer conditions on the dry side. Regular feeding once or twice a month can be a big help. Keep scissors handy to snip off a sprig of any of the cooking herbs. They thrive on constant trimming and reward you with a fresh flush of new growth.

Recipe:
3 sprigs oregano
2 garlic cloves
1 small bunch parsley
1 small hot red pepper
5 oz . Parmesan cheese cut in small chunks
1 qt. extra-virgin olive oil

Try this pasta oil recipe for salads or add tomatoes for a quick pasta sauce.
